tollerances question

I'm modifying some powerizer jumping stilts to use bearings. I have a simple question. If I'm going to press fit a bearing into a bearing race what type of tolerances do I need? Is +- .001 close enough or +-.0025 better? Should it be an interference fit (the bearing is bigger then the hole) or simple close.

Thanks in advanced

That depends on the type of bearing. Ball and needle are a little different, and if they are fully enclosed bearings or not. It also depends on the size of the bearing and the load. If you have the accuracy available, then .0005 would be best, but that might be overkill for your application. I would use a .001 press fit, and the chamfer/radius at the bottom of the housing should be of the proper dimension to prevent or damage.

The other thing you could do is make use of a slip fit with a snap ring that holds it in place.

If you have more questions or details, I'd be happy to help.
