So over the weekend I got a great idea for an upgrade to my butterfly art car.
I want a tongue that unfurls and shoots cool water that is scented like a gardenia.
Any ideas for mechanism(s) or components that might work?

Mon, July 24, 2006 - 11:31 AMthat can't be too hard. I am sure that there are some ideas out there. Depends on how you want to run the tongue, also if you use soft rubber hose it has a tendency to whip.

try a length of soft plastic tubing, coiled up with a fairly thin piece of spring steel to keep it rolled up until you turn on the water, which would need to be pressurized. at the end of your tubing you could have several nozzles to make a fine mist.

It needs to be pressurized. More than one nozzle would be good.
The spring part is the greatest challenge (if in fact it is a spring) If you can imagine anything with weight coiled up about 1-1.5 feet in diameter... it probably won't have a tendency to stay in a nice neat coil. -

Mon, July 24, 2006 - 6:01 PMi was thinking the spring steel (not a "spring", but the same metal) should be a long, flat piece with a tendancy to roll up. curly sheet metal.
if you used a wire-y type piece, your tube probably wouldn't coil right (just as those noisemakers don't always roll up correctly every time)... but a flat piece would keep it all straight as it coiled up.
now that i think about it some more, another issue comes to mind: when you have no water in the tube, it should coil just fine. release the pressurized water, and hopefully it will straighten out (the water pressure overcoming the steel's springy-ness), and spray water.
here's the problem: once you turn OFF the pressure to the tube, all that water has to go somewhere for the tube to coil up again. assuming you don't want to waste that water and just dump it somewhere, you'll have to figure out a way to return that water to your reservoir. it shouldn't be too difficult, but there will probably be some valve action going on in there somewhere that you'll have to figure out.
